Every layer of abstraction is another place where performance leaks away. Every feature you include is something else you have to maintain, debug, and explain.

    My advice to you: become masters of simplification. Not simplistic thinking—simple thinking. Ask relentlessly: what can I remove? What can I eliminate? What can I make more direct?

I dug tunnels under my house—not because I needed tunnels, but because the physical, repetitive work freed my mind to think about circuit designs.

    Your generation faces an attention economy designed to fragment your focus into smaller and smaller pieces. Every app, every platform, every service wants a slice of your consciousness. They’re very good at getting it.

    My advice: learn to protect your attention as fiercely as you’d protect your physical safety. It’s not enough to be smart or knowledgeable. The problems worth solving require sustained, focused thought. They require you to hold complex systems in your head long enough to see the patterns, to find the elegant solution.

    Build barriers around your thinking time. Turn things off. Disappear. Let people think you’re eccentric if necessary. The alternative is spending your career in a state of perpetual distraction, never quite diving deep enough to do truly original work.

    On AI and Human Judgment

    Now, about these artificial intelligence systems you’ve built. I’ve been experimenting with them this week, and they’re remarkable. They can write code, analyze data, generate images, even carry on conversations that seem intelligent.

    I can see why some of you might be intimidated. If machines can do all this, what’s left for humans?

    Starting Cray Research was the right decision for me, but it’s not right for everyone. Some people thrive in organizations. They like collaboration, shared responsibility, the resources large companies provide.

    My advice: be honest about what you need to do your best work. If you’re miserable in a corporate environment, leave. If you need the structure and resources a company provides, stay. Don’t let ego or other people’s expectations drive that decision.

    But whatever environment you choose, insist on the conditions you need to think clearly and work effectively. I negotiated the right to work from Chippewa Falls, hours away from CDC headquarters, because I needed distance from corporate politics. I built Cray Research in my hometown for the same reason.

    You have more leverage than you think, especially when you’re good at something rare and valuable. Use it to create working conditions that let you think deeply and build well.

    On Speed vs. Perfection

    But you’ll also face enormous pressure to work on problems that are lucrative but trivial. Apps that optimize advertising. Algorithms that maximize engagement. Systems designed primarily to extract profit rather than create value.

    I’m not suggesting you take a vow of poverty. I made good money. But make it solving problems you think matter. Life’s too short, and your talents too valuable, to spend optimizing click-through rates or building the fortieth identical social media platform.

    Find the equivalent of “make computers fast enough to predict weather” for your generation. Find the problem where your specific skills and interests align with something that genuinely needs doing. Then pursue it with the kind of obsessive focus that probably seems crazy to everyone around you.

    • Philosophers, storytellers, athletes, gardeners, explorers pushing the boundaries of mind, body, and cosmos.
    • Communities forming around shared visions—reviving lost languages, simulating alternate histories, designing new forms of life or society.

    Value will no longer be measured in dollars or productivity metrics, but in impact on consciousness—how deeply something inspires, connects, challenges, or delights others. Reputation, attention, and meaning become the new “currencies,” freely given and received in networks of mutual appreciation.

    Money, born from agricultural surplus to coordinate scarcity, will fade into obsolescence—not through revolution, but through irrelevance. Just as we no longer barter grain for pottery in daily life, future generations will look back on wage labor with the same bemused detachment.

    The creator economy we glimpse today—platforms, AI assistants, distributed tools—is merely the Neolithic transition phase: the first unreliable surpluses of time, knowledge, and productive capacity.

    What comes next is not just an economy of creators, but a civilization of creators.

    The farm-factory-office continuum ends not with a bang, but with abundance.

    The labor pool dissolves into an ocean of possibility.

    The question is no longer “How do we earn a living?” but “How do we choose to live?”

    And that, finally, is the true liberation technology has always been building toward.
